education is number one! in areas where gun ownership is at its highest there are fewer issues related to gun crime. some might say this is due to the fact you don’t know who might be carrying a gun so the criminals are less likely to just attack you at random for fear of their own life, and this is partly the case. the other part of that though is general gun related education. when you restrict access to proper gun related education amongst the youth you then rely on television, the internet, and of course video games to teach kids about guns. these places rarely offer real education in safe handling of guns, and they instill poor principles in the youth. when children are taught at an early age about the capabilities and the safe handling of firearms, they are less likely to abuse them later. part of proper education of the use of firearms is also instilling the principles of respecting life. even those who hunt have a healthy respect for life. they are taught to be thankful for the life that was given up for them to put food on the table for their family. this is then carried forward into other aspects of the youth’s life. sheltering kids from firearms and proper handling principles of them only fuels curiosity and often times leads to bad decisions. the second principle that seems to need to be retaught is to those adults who do own firearms already. i have seen all too many gun owners who simply do not take proper precautions as it relates to restricting access to firearms for the little ones in their homes. if you have little ones or even young adults in your home, then the responsibility lies solely with you as the owner of those firearms to know that they are where they belong at all times. if you do not take measures to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands when you are away, then you
